Is your Mac up to date with the latest version of the Mac operating system? Is it using the version required by a product that you want to use with your Mac? Which versions are earlier (older) or later (newer, more recent)? To find out, learn which version is installed now.
If your macOS isn't up to date, you may be able to update to a later version.
Which macOS version is installed?
From the Apple menu in the corner of your screen, choose About This Mac. You should see the macOS name, such as macOS Big Sur, followed by its version number. If you need to know the build number as well, click the version number to see it.
Which macOS version is the latest?
These are all Mac operating systems, starting with the most recent. When a major new macOS is released, it gets a new name, such as macOS Big Sur. As updates that change the macOS version number become available, this article is updated to show the latest version of that macOS.
If your Mac is using an earlier version of any Mac operating system, you should install the latest Apple software updates, which can include important security updates and updates for the apps that are installed by macOS, such as Safari, Books, Messages, Mail, Music, Calendar, and Photos.

Cute battery indicator that will go from happy to sad as battery life goes down, then back to smiling again when you start charging your MacBook
What's new in Battery Buddy 1.0.3:
- The battery now appears sad when it’s at 20% or lower (instead of at 33% or lower like it was before).
- This update also resolves an issue where the battery’s colors could appear incorrect when using multiple displays.
If you feel that the regular macOS battery indicator doesn't do enough to guilt-trip you into charging your MacBook, you may want to take a look at Battery Buddy. It's an alternative indicator that can pretty much guarantee your battery will never drop below 20% charge, as that would bring about the dreaded sad face emoji.
So what do you need to use this app? First, a MacBook. The app will run on a desktop Mac, but the lack of a battery will confuse it greatly. Both Intel and Apple Silicon MacBooks are supported.
Once the app is running, a new battery indicator will be visible in the menu bar. If your laptop has more than 50% of its battery life remaining, you'll see a smiling face that lets you know everything is right with the world. Under 50%, it will look slightly worried, and below 20%, it will look downright miserable. Just start charging your device to bring back the smiles.
That's pretty much all there is to it. There is nothing to configure, no alternative colors or styles. It would probably be a good idea to add the app to your login items in order to avoid having to launch it manually every time you power up your MacBook.
